American violinist Dr. Jonathon Winter enjoys a diverse career as a solo, chamber, and ensemble musician across the United States and Europe. As a soloist, Dr. Winter has performed with the Oneota Valley Orchestra and the Eurasia Chamber Orchestra of Berlin, and has performed in masterclasses with Kathrin ten Hagen, Elmar Oliveira, Judith Ingolfsson, and Zakhar Bron. He has been a member of the Palm Beach Symphony, AIMS in Graz Festival Orchestra, Round Top Festival Orchestra, and the National Repertory Orchestra. Equally comfortable as a studio musician, Dr. Winter can be heard as concertmaster on Latin Grammy-nominated album “An Open Book” with Jorge Mejia for Sony Music, and has performed with major artists such as Jeff Beal, Kristin Chenoweth, Midori, and John Williams, among others. Dr. Winter is an advocate for contemporary music, having worked with composers Libby Larsen, Mary Ellen Childs, Christopher Theofanidis, and Martin Bresnik, and has premiered several new works with various ensembles across the United States and Europe.
Also an established educator and a formally trained Suzuki Method teacher, Dr. Winter previously held a faculty position at the Suzuki School of the Frost Preparatory Program at the University of Miami. He maintained a full studio of young violinists, taught group classes, and coached chamber music. His students have successfully competed in both local and national competitions.
Now based in Boulder, Colorado, Dr. Winter is a faculty member of Boulder Suzuki Strings and performs with ensembles in the Denver Metro, such as the Boulder Philharmonic, Sphere Ensemble, Colorado Symphony, and Colorado Music Festival. He is also a member of the Timberline Quartet, which is in residency at Friends of Chamber Music Denver. The Quartet focuses on education and outreach, performing diverse repertoire in schools and other public spaces in Colorado.
Dr. Winter is a co-founder of the Driftless Chamber Music Institute (DCMI) and Quartet Winneshiek, located in the Driftless region of Northeast Iowa. The Institute creates immersive chamber music experiences that bring together students, adult musicians, and professional artists for collaborative study, performance, and community engagement rooted in the artistic and cultural traditions of the region. He earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he was the teaching assistant of Fritz Gearhart and Charles Wetherbee. He also holds degrees from the University of Minnesota, University of Miami, and the Lynn Conservatory. His previous teachers include Mark Bjork, Carol Cole, and Charles Castleman. His forthcoming album Origin: Music by Women of the Americas with pianist Barbara Noyes explores the music of Jennifer Higdon, Gabriela Lena Frank, Dana Kaufman, and Leilehua Lanzilotti.
